Welcome to another edition of The Triad Advantage! While we talk a lot about our bustling Triad cities, sometimes the best weekend escapes (or permanent retreats!) are located right in our own backyard. Today, we are shining a spotlight on Randolph County, affectionately known as the "Heart of North Carolina."
Just a short drive south of Greensboro, Randolph County perfectly balances wide-open spaces, deep cultural roots, and vibrant small towns. Here is your quick guide to exploring everything the area has to offer!
Asheboro & The North Carolina Zoo At the center of the county sits Asheboro, a thriving town that proudly hosts a world-class attraction: the North Carolina Zoo. Spanning thousands of acres, it is the world’s largest natural-habitat zoo! After a day of watching elephants and giraffes roam, head over to historic downtown Asheboro (a.k.a. "Zoo City"). It is the perfect place to grab a bite at a locally owned eatery or catch a movie at the vintage Sunset Theatre.
Seagrove: A Living Art Museum Did you know Randolph County is the "Handmade Pottery Capital of the United States"? The quaint town of Seagrove is home to dozens of working potters. Some artisans are carrying on centuries-old family traditions, while others are pushing the boundaries of modern forms and glazes. Stepping into these wood cabin galleries is an incredible cultural experience.
The Uwharrie Mountains For outdoor enthusiasts, the Uwharrie National Forest is a must-visit. Recognized as one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America, this sprawling natural playground offers miles of serene hiking trails, fishing and kayaking at Badin Lake, and even rugged off-road vehicle paths for the adventurous.
NASCAR Royalty in Randleman If you want to experience authentic Southern racing history, head up to Randleman. This is the home of the legendary Petty family! You can explore the Petty Museum to learn all about Richard Petty, the seven-time NASCAR champion.
The Triad Advantage Perspective on Randolph County: Whether you are looking for a fantastic family day trip or dreaming of a home with rolling farmland and mountain views, Randolph County is an absolute gem in the Piedmont Triad region.
