If you ask a local to describe the weather in the Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and

High Point), they’ll likely tell you it’s "just right"—with a side of humidity.

Technically, we live in a humid subtropical climate. But in plain English, that means we get four distinct seasons without the punishing extremes you find in the rest of the country. We aren't buried in snow like the North, but we aren't stuck in an eternal sauna like Florida.

Here is what you can expect from the skies when you visit, and how our calendar compares to yours.

Spring: The "Yellow" Season

When: March – May The Vibe: Explosive beauty and the Great Pollening.

Spring in the Triad is arguably the most beautiful time of year. The azaleas pop, the dogwoods bloom, and temperatures jump quickly from the 60s into the perfect 70s.

The Catch: For about two weeks in April, everything—your car, your porch, your dog—will be coated in a fine layer of yellow pine pollen. It’s a rite of passage here.

  • What to Pack: Layers and antihistamines.

  • The Temp: Highs 65°F – 78°F.

Summer: Air You Can Wear

When: June – August The Vibe: Sweet tea, porch sitting, and afternoon storms.

Let’s be honest: it gets hot. But it’s the humidity that surprises visitors from the West Coast. The air feels thick and "sticky," which makes 88°F feel like 98°F. The upside? We get dramatic, cooling thunderstorms almost every afternoon around 4:00 PM. They dump rain for twenty minutes, the sun comes back out, and everything smells like fresh asphalt and grass.

  • What to Pack: Breathable fabrics (linen is your friend) and an umbrella.

  • The Temp: Highs 85°F – 92°F (but feels hotter).

Fall: The Payoff

When: September – November The Vibe: Football, fire pits, and foliage.

If you can choose any time to visit, choose October. The humidity breaks, the air turns crisp and dry, and the hardwood trees put on a spectacular show of red and orange. Unlike the North, where winter arrives quickly, our autumn lingers. You can often wear a t-shirt on Thanksgiving Day.

  • What to Pack: Jeans and a light hoodie.

  • The Temp: Highs 60°F – 75°F.

Winter: The Wildcard

When: December – February The Vibe: Chilly, gray, but short-lived.

Winter here is mild compared to the rest of the country. We usually see highs in the 40s or 50s. We don’t get much snow (maybe one or two dustings a year), but we are famous for ice storms. If the forecast mentions "wintry mix," the whole city shuts down and everyone rushes to the store for bread and milk. It’s a local tradition.

  • What to Pack: A solid coat, but leave the heavy-duty snow boots at home.

  • The Temp: Highs 45°F – 52°F; Lows dip into the 20s.

How We Compare: The Triad Cheat Sheet

Not sure how this stacks up against where you're from? Here is the quick comparison:

Vs. The Northeast (NYC/Boston)

We are milder. You won’t need a shovel here. Our "cold snaps" last three days, not three months. By February, while the North is still frozen, our daffodils are starting to poke through the ground.

Vs. The Deep South (Atlanta/New Orleans)

We have actual seasons. In the Deep South, summer can feel like it lasts from April to October. In the Triad, we get a true, dormant winter and a crisp, distinct autumn. We get a break from the heat.

Vs. The West Coast (LA/Phoenix)

We are greener (and wetter). The biggest difference is the moisture. The Triad is lush and green because it rains year-round. If you are used to "dry heat," the summer humidity here will be a shock to the system—but your skin will love it.

Vs. The Mountains (Asheville/Boone)

We are warmer. Don't be fooled by a weather map of "Western NC." Just two hours west of us, the elevation climbs and the weather gets much harsher. It might be snowing in Boone while it’s raining and 45°F in Greensboro.

Forecast for Your Trip (Jan 23–25, 2026)

Since you are reading this in late January, this is the  "dead of winter" for us. Expect brisk mornings (around 30°F) and afternoons that hover around 50°F. It’s perfect jacket weather—cold enough to feel cozy, but warm enough to walk around downtown without freezing.
