If you are looking for things to do in the Triad this weekend, the short answer is: Plan for massive crowds in Winston-Salem and dress for freezing temperatures.

A performance by the Ringling Bros. Circus

The weekend of January 29–February 1, 2026, is headlined by the return of NASCAR’s "The Clash" to Bowman Gray Stadium, which will dominate traffic and energy in Winston-Salem. In Greensboro, the entertainment focus is indoors with the Ringling Bros. Circus at the Coliseum and the Broadway musical "Shucked" at Tanger Center.

The Weather Warning: It will be sunny but cold, with overnight lows dropping near freezing. If you are attending outdoor events like The Clash, seat cushions and heavy winter coats are mandatory to avoid the "bleacher freeze."

"Boots on the Ground" Weather Tip:

If you are heading to Bowman Gray Stadium for NASCAR, do not underestimate the cold. The stadium has aluminum bleachers that retain the freeze and will sap your body heat rapidly once the sun sets. You must bring a seat cushion or a thick blanket to sit on. Sitting directly on metal in 30-degree weather will be miserable.

What is Happening in Winston-Salem? (NASCAR Focus)

Winston-Salem is the epicenter of the action this weekend as the NASCAR Cup Series takes over the historic "Madhouse."

  • The Main Event: The Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium (Sat/Sun). Sunday is the main race at 8:00 PM.

  • Traffic Alert: Expect severe congestion on Stadium Drive and MLK Jr. Drive all weekend. Avoid these roads unless you have a ticket.

  • Free Alternative: If you didn't get tickets (or want to save money), catch the Hauler Parade on Friday afternoon in downtown Winston-Salem. You get to see the massive team rigs up close and feel the energy without the ticket cost.

  • Hockey Note: The Twin City Thunderbirds play Saturday at 6:00 PM at the Fairgrounds Annex (right next to the stadium). Arrive by 5:00 PM to secure parking in the main lot, or be prepared to walk from satellite lots.

What is Happening in Greensboro? (Theater & Circus)

Greensboro offers indoor, climate-controlled entertainment, which is perfect for this cold forecast.

  • Ringling Bros. Circus: Performing at the First Horizon Coliseum all weekend.1 Note: This reimagined show focuses on human stunts (BMX, High-Wire) rather than animals. It is loud, high-energy, and concert-like.

  • Broadway's "Shucked": The Tony-winning comedy about corn plays at Tanger Center all weekend.2

  • Parking Tip: The Bellemeade Deck fills up fast for Tanger shows. Save time by parking at the Marriott deck or finding street parking on Elm Street (free after 6 PM) and walking the two blocks.

Are There Quieter Events in High Point?

If you want to avoid the massive crowds in Winston and Greensboro, High Point offers a more relaxed cultural vibe.

  • "Love Jones" Poetry: Friday night (Jan 30) at Demhaj Coffee & Lounge. This offers a sophisticated "coffee house" vibe with jazz and spoken word—perfect for a date night that isn't a rowdy bar scene.

  • Blacksmith Demo: Saturday daytime (Jan 31) at the High Point Museum. A free, educational event where kids can watch iron crafting in the historical park.

What Should I Do Next?

  • Check Tickets: NASCAR Clash tickets are likely sold out. Check Verified Resale on Ticketmaster immediately if you plan to go.

  • Book Reservations: If attending Shucked, dining spots near Tanger (like White and Wood or B. Christopher’s) will be packed. Book reservations at least 3 days in advance.

  • Prep Your Car: With freezing nights, double-check your tire pressure and toss an extra blanket in the trunk just in case.

Dad Joke of the Week:  I have been teaching my dog to fetch tools from my garage.

He's not perfect, but he knows the drill.
